Project Reports:

 

Arizona Border HIV/AIDS Care Project:

 

Trainings:  Dr. Carmichael was scheduled for clinic at Sunset (6/6) and saw 10 patients with Dr. Wang.  Dr. Carmichael conducted an educational consultation with Dr. Wang on patients seen that day.

 

Dr. Carmichael has continued his conversations with Dr. Thompson (ID) in Yuma about participating in the project.  Dr. Thompson would be interested in participating as a referral specialist.  Conversations will continue and mechanism for payment will be explored. 

 

Out Reach Activities:  Yuma County –Puentes de Amistad, Yuma County Health Department and Campesinos Sin Frontera continue to conduct joint outreach.  Gabby Leon (YCHD) conducted the CDC C & T training in Spanish on June 17th - 19th to the promotoras.   

 

Santa Cruz CountyPlaticamos Salud has moved into their new building adjacent to Mariposa Clinic.  The clinic case manager who was responsible for their HIV positive patients has moved into a new position within the clinic.  Platicamos Salud and the clinic will interview applicants for the case management position.  They are trying to recruit a physician from Nogales, Sonora.  Outreach and education activities continue to be provided to the clients of Southeastern Arizona Behavioral Health (SEABH), truck stops and motels.  The summer youth training program began on June 17th 30 youth were enrolled in the program.  The summer youth program will run through August 1, 2002.  National Testing Day activities include community outreach and radio spot.  The CDC counseling and testing training (Spanish) for the promotoras has been placed on hold until the new case manager is hired. 

 

Cochise County – Case manager (Eunice Parks) of Cochise County Health Department (CCHD) continues to work with enrolled patients of the project and assists in the transfer of patients care to Chiricahua Community Health Center.  Ms. Parks will be attending the collaborators meetings representing CCHD.  Sharon Schinstock has resigned her position at CCHD and her last day was 6/19.  The Border Health Foundation has scheduled trainings for Compañeros by Nena Garcia and Puentes de Amistad promotoras.  Compañeros will assist CCHD in outreach activities upon completion of their training.

                                               

Dissemination Activities:  Working on the presentations for the grantee meeting and all Titles meeting in Washington.   

 

Project Enrollment:  To date the project has enrolled 69 patients.

 

Local Evaluation:  The project collaborators continue to submit data to Impact Consultants.  The project is re-administering modules E and G to enrolled patients.  Project is in the process of having patients sign the OU consent form for data extraction from medical charts.

q       PROGRAMMATIC: (Veronica)

·         On June 17, 2002 a meeting with Ben Archer Health Center’s (CHC) key staff was held to discuss the collaboration with their promotora project to conduct outreach as well as the trainings for FY3.

·         Promotores staffs were involved in a braining storming exercise as part of CdV’s strategic planning process. Although the majority of their time is spent out of the office I was impressed by the contributions made.

·         On June 22, 2002 CdV participated on the Las Cruces Gay Pride Picnic.  

Trainings

·         On June 19, 2002 Dr. Steve Jenison, Infectious Disease Physician from the New Mexico Department of Health presented at La Clinica de Familia (CHC) there was a total of 17 providers present which included Physicians, Mid-level practitioners. Patricia Carter, Program Manager for the New Mexico AIDS Education and Training Center was present and provided training materials as well as CME’s and CEU’s.

·         A Tentative training on Co-Infections (HIV/AIDS/Hepatitis) has been scheduled for August 9, 2002 for CdV clinical staff. Dr. Karla Thorton from University of New Mexico Hospital will be presenting.

Other

·         Attended a planning meeting in El Paso, Texas to discuss the Candle Light Vigil Dos Naciones, Un Corazon scheduled for August 25, 2002 at the Santa Fe Bridge.

 

·         USMBHA & Farmworkers Justice Fund are planning a Promotores Forum to be held in Las Cruces, NM. We will be part of the planning committee.

 

q       LOCAL EVALUATION: (Michelle)

·         Jennifer Felderman, our Graduate Research and Evaluation Assistant, started last week.  We are excited to have her on board; she will be doing a little bit of everything.

·         The first provider training with La Clinica de Familia occurred on June 19th.  Although it was a smaller group than previous similar trainings with Ben Archer Health Center, the proportion of physicians was higher and the session lasted 2 hours as opposed to 1 hour.

·         In assisting the CdV Strategic Planning Facilitator, I summarized the data collected from the annual client survey into a 2-page report (return rate of 40% and 28% of the surveys were completed in Spanish).

SPNS Enrollment

 

The CARE Teams continue with recruitment efforts to enroll the remaining clients into SPNS evaluation 10 completed for month of June.

 

Evaluation

 

        *  Data collection continues to progress.  We are getting ready

            to begin our second wave of data collection in July.

 

        *  Virginia Longoria met with Dr. Meza (physician), Rosa

            (nurse) and Tony (peer advocate) to begin development of the new local

            bilingual treatment knowledge measure.

 

        *  Ernesto Marin, an undergraduate student, has been working on

            the project temporarily, in order to allow Chris Johnson to do some data

            entry and cleaning for our July presentation.  We should have quite a few

            data clarifications in soon for Tim.

Evaluation

·        Development of two new instruments.  1) Client KAB will measure knowledge of HIV related medical and social services.  2) Treatment Education Instrument will measure treatment related activities (e.g. adherence, side effects, client support, t cell, viral load) at each visit with treatment educator.

·        Abstract on SYHC focus groups was accepted to USCA in September as roundtable discussion.  Mari, Rosana and Alisa will attend. (Roundtable is Saturday September 21, 4:00 to 6:00 PM)  Abstract is on OU website for review.

·        Project data collection activities continue at a steady pace.  As of June 17, 2002, there are 2135 unduplicated records in the Local Database.

CHANGES IN EVALUATION STAFF

·        Sandi Duggan left the Evaluation Coordinator position effective June 14, 2002 to join HRSA as a SPNS Project Officer. 

·        George Losoya will assume interim coordination responsibilities beginning in late July.

 

LOCAL EVALUATION SYSTEM LEVEL INTERVENTION ACTIVITIES

·        With the loss of the Brownsville Community Health Center, the system level intervention model will be revisited at the evaluator’s next site visit.

·        Evaluation of the social marketing intervention will begin on July 8, 2002.

Centro de Evaluación Report:

 

1.  Consent Form – Medical Chart Reviews has been posted on web page.  Dr. Barney projects to begin obtaining client signatures on consent form.  Medical chart reviews will be implemented in September 2002.

 

2.  The Centro de Evaluación staff marched in the gay pride parade on Sunday, June 23, 2002 in Oklahoma City.  Dr. Curiel and Gregg Fryday carried the banner, Dr. Barney and Betty drove the jeep with the flag and University logos.

 

3.  Project sites were asked to submit their power point presentations to OU by June 21st. so that they could be downloaded on the lap top computer.  Projects were also advised to bring a back-up copy on floppy disk to the grantees meeting.

 

4.  Projects were asked if they were encountering any problems with confirming reservations at the Doubletree Hotel.  No one seemed to have any difficulties.  Grantees were advised that OU will provide a continental breakfast at the SPNS Grantees’ Meeting on July 25 & 26, 2002.  Transportation to the Parklawn may be obtained at the Metro station which is about one block from the Doubletree Hotel.  Cost for the bus from  Metro to the Parklawn Building is 25 cents each way and runs every five minutes.  Walking distance to the Parklawn is about 6-8 blocks. 

 

HRSA Updates:  Adan asked projects if they had any additional questions or concerns about the registration costs for the Ryan White All Titles meeting.  There were no questions or concerns raised.

 

Adan advised that notice of awards should be out to grantees by the end of this week.  Betty advised that if the actual award notice is not sent out by Thursday, June 28th, that OU will require a letter from HRSA advising that OU’s application has been reviewed and the award will be issued within the next week.  Adan advised he will check on the status of the award notice and if it is determined it will not be sent out before the end of this week, Adan will fax a memo to OU.
