The ABHAC Project is a program of El Rio Health Center funded by the U.S. Health and Human Services Health Resources Services Administration’s HIV AIDS Bureau Special Projects of National Significance and the Bureau of Primary Health Care to enhance the care and treatment of people with HIV/AIDS along the Arizona-Mexico border.

Purpose
The Arizona Border HIV/AIDS Care Project is a collaboration of community agencies, county health departments and community health clinics/ centers with the purpose of increasing access to health care for HIV positive individuals not in care living along the Arizona-Mexico border. Strategies include training border physicians in the treatment and care of HIV/AIDS and providing information on the availability of HIV-related services in border communities. The ABHAC Project in collaboration with the Arizona AIDS Education and Training Center provides training with the assistance of the physicians from the Special Immunology Associates in the management of HIV disease.

Activities
OUTREACH & EUCATION

Outreach activities are provided by county health departments and/or promotora programs in the border communities.

COUNSELING & TESTING

County health departments and designated counseling and testing sites conduct HIV counseling and testing for the project.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

Education and training is provided to community providers, paraprofessionals, medical professionals, and physicians. Trainings are provided by the AZ AIDS ETC and the physicians from the Special Immunology Associates office.

EVALUATION

The ABHAC Project is evaluated at a local and national level. Impact Consultants conducts the local evaluation and collaborates on the national evaluation activities with the Centro de Evaluación: U.S./Mexico Border Health Evaluation & Technical Assistance Center of the University of Oklahoma and University of California at Berkeley.

HEALTH CARE

The Health Resources & Services Administration Bureau of Primary Health Care provide the community health centers/clinics with additional resources to provide medical care and treatment to HIV positive individuals participating in the project.

WHO QUALIFIES

Individuals that are diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and reside or work in a border community. Defined as living within 62 miles of the Arizona-Mexico border.
